The first UFC event of 2020 is upon us. The three-week break was too much especially when there was a UFC event every Saturday night for months. Here are my main card predictions for UFC 246: McGregor vs Cerrone, with a few prelims thrown in.
Conor McGregor vs. Donald Cerrone
The biggest MMA star of all time, Conor McGregor, returns after a year off and it is exciting. Put aside all of the out of competition bad behavior, MMA needs McGregor back. He is great for the sport and he gets more eyes on the sport. When this fight was announced, I thought the UFC was just feeding McGregor an easy win with an aging Cerrone but the fact that the fight is at 170 lbs. definitely changed my mind. At 170 lbs. McGregor isn’t as strong and his cardio isn’t as good (from what we have seen in his only two fights at 170). Cerrone has more ways to win whether it be kicks, wrestling, submissions, and more. All that being said, McGregor wins via TKO.
Holly Holm vs. Raquel Pennington
Holly Holm desperately needs a win, and a convincing win. It seems like she is on her way to becoming the gatekeeper for the 135-145 divisions, if she loses. This is the second time that these two women have fought, and I think it’s going to be another entertaining fight. Holm wins via split decision.
Aleksei Oleinik vs. Maurice Greene
This seems like a young lion taking out a veteran fight, but Oleinik beats everyone that isn’t super elite. There is two outcomes of this fight: Maurice Greene knocking out Olenik or Oleinik submitting Greene. I am taking Oleinik via submission.
Brian Kelleher vs. Ode Osbourne
This fight got bumped up from the UFC fight pass early prelims to replace Cláudia Gadelha vs. Alexa Grasso which was canclled due to Grasso missing weight by 5.5 lbs. I would be lying if I said I knew anything about Ode Osbourne other than he fought on Dana White’s Contender Series. Brian Kelleher always comes to fight but I think Osbourne wins via submission.
Anthony Pettis vs. Carlos Diego Ferreira
Anthony Pettis returns to the 155-weight division after getting beat up by Nate Diaz pretty badly. He is facing a surging Carlos Ferreira who is very talented. Pettis seems to be on a win one, lose one, win one streak which is crazy to think about. My brain says to pick Ferrerira to win but my heart is going with Pettis. Pettis via decision.
A couple prelim predictions are:
Maycee Barber beats Roxanne Modafferi via TKO.
Sodiq Yusuff beats Andre Fili via TKO
Tim Elliott beats Askar Askarov via Decision
Nasrat Haqparast beats Drew Dober via TKO
I’m glad the UFC is back and I’m excited for this fight card.
UFC 246 takes place January 18, 2020 on ESPN PPV.
Enjoy the fights!
