The 2020 Academy Award nominations were released on the morning of January 13, 2020.

While I do agree with most of the nominations, there are a few head scratchers. Here are some of my thoughts.

BEST PICTURE

Ford v Ferrari”

“The Irishman”

“Jojo Rabbit”

“Joker”

“Little Women”

“Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood”

“Marriage Story”

“Parasite”

“1917”

I agree with all of these nominations but if the academy can nominate ten movies…what the hell? Uncut GemsThe Farewell, and Booksmart could have easily been nominated.

Avengers: End Game could have easily been nominated but I could have some major bias as it was my favorite of the year. It could have gotten some Lord of the Rings love.

ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE

Antonio Banderas, “Pain and Glory”

Leonardo DiCaprio, “Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood”

Adam Driver, “Marriage Story”

Joaquin Phoenix, “Joker”

Jonathan Pryce, “The Two Popes”

Best actor is always a staked category and this year is no different. Taron Egerton deserved to be nominated. Who gets taken out though? I haven’t seen Pain and Glory yet so I don’t think that would be fair. I would have taken out Jonathan Pryce or I HATE to say it, Leonardo DiCaprio. I thought DiCaprio was excellent, but he was just as supporting as Brad Pitt. There are two scenes in particular that are definitely Oscar winning but other than that he was fine. Egerton transformed into Elton John and even sang which is a plus. If Rocketman would have come out in November, there is no doubt in my mind that he would have been nominated. Two other actors who could have been nominated is Robert De Niro for The Irishman and Adam Sandler for Uncut Gems.

ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE

Cynthia Erivo, “Harriet”

Scarlett Johansson, “Marriage Story”

Saoirse Ronan, “Little Women”

Renée Zellweger, “Judy”

Charlize Theron, “Bombshell”

I’m sorry but Cynthia Erivo should be replaced by Awkwafina for her performance in The Farewell. Erivo is only nominated because she is playing a famous figure and the Academy loves nominating slave films. Awkwafina was so good, and it was her first full dramatic role to which she knocked out of the park. One other actress that deserved a nomination is Lupita Nyong’o for Us.

ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE

Tom Hanks, “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood”

Anthony Hopkins, “The Two Popes”

Al Pacino, “The Irishman”

Joe Pesci, “The Irishman”

Brad Pitt, “Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood”

Nothing to say here. I think the academy got his 100% right.

ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE

Kathy Bates, “Richard Jewell”

Laura Dern, “Marriage Story”

Scarlett Johansson, “Jojo Rabbit”

Florence Pugh, “Little Women”

Margot Robbie, “Bombshell”

I honestly think this is the weakest category this year. I think Margot Robbie and Scarlett Johansson could easily be replaced with Jennifer Lopez from Hustlers and Shuzhen Zhao from The Farewell. Nicole Kidman had a better performance than Robbie and they were in the same film.

DIRECTOR

Martin Scorsese, “The Irishman”

Quentin Tarantino, “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”

Bong Joon-ho, “Parasite”

Sam Mendes, “1917”

Todd Phillips, “Joker”

Boy oh boy, waking up to Twitter going crazy because of the lack of female directors was something. Yes, it sucks that there isn’t a female director in this category but who would you take out?  Greta Gerwig is an easy nomination to replace someone with, but I don’t think Little Women was directed better than any of the movies nominated. It is just another year with more people frustrated. I truly believe that there should be more than five nominations but that is an argument that is pointed out every year.

 Documentary

I also wanted to give the documentary Love, Antosha a shout out. I think it should have gotten nominated for best documentary. If you haven’t seen it, seek it out and bring tissues.

The 92nd Academy Awards will be held on February 9, 2020 on ABC.
